Cave Creek, Ar
|I'm wondering how often to water pompous grass and how often to fertilize it and what kind of fertilizer to use. The blades are starting to look a little pale and brown. The plants are in AZ and get the morning and part of the afternoon sun.

|Your pampas grass will need two deep soakings a week during the summer months and one deep soaking a week the rest of the year. Pampas grass will respond to a spring feeding of a general garden fertilizer such as a 10-10-10 in amounts as listed on the label which varies depending upon the size of the plant. Browing foliage is probably due to the hot summer sunshine, even though your plant is getting some afternoon shade. Just wait it out and prune away any brown foliage this fall when the weather cools. You can build a watering basin beneath your plant to help concentrate the water directly over the root mass. Fill the basin, allow to drain, then fill it a second time. Do this twice a week and your ornamental grass should get plenty of water to help it endure the summer heat. Best wishes with your pampas grass.
