| I have a mature avocado tree in an unprotected area. This winter we had weather down to 17 degrees for a number of days, possibly a week. Is the tree salvagable? It has lost about half of its leaves. Needless to say all the fruit froze. Is there any hope? |
| Sub-freezing weather can take a terrible toll on an avocado tree, but yours may still be alright. Prune off the obviously dead branches, and prune back the dead stems to live wood. You may have lost next year's fruit crop, too. Allow your tree to recover as best it can before you expect it to produce fruit. As long as it develops green leaves and new stems, it should recover. If it shows no signs of life by early summer, it's probably a goner. Good luck with your tree! |
