I prune my hydrangeas in the early spring, just as the leaf buds begin to swell on the branches. Big leaf hydrangea produces flowers on the new growth that emerges from old wood. I prune mine down to about 24" from the ground and then remove some of the oldest stems that are no longer productive. The new growth that develops will grow lush and thick and each new stem usually develops a beautiful flower. Best wishes with your hydrangea!
