My potted bougainvillea dropped all its leaves over a 5 month period, and now refused to grow more. What happened and what should I do?

Bougainvillea has an unsettling tendency to drop its leaves and sulk when brought indoors for the winter. For this reason it is often a good idea to allow it to experience cooler temperatures (say 50 degrees) and less water during the winter months so that it may "rest" until spring. Early spring is a good time to trim it back and repot it if needed in preparation for its summer growth spurt. When you see it beginning to leaf out, move it into maximum light and if possible, gradually acclimate it and move it outdoors for the summer. Good luck with your bougainvillea!
