My large mugo pine is about 7 ' semicircle and 3' 6' tall and started droping needles which turned brown about 2 years ago. only the topp center is still busy and green and entire plant is only about 20% needled. Is this common and will it grow back ?

I am not certain what is wrong with your mugo pine. It could be "white pine blight" which causes just what you have described or it could be attributed to the dry year we had, or it might be somethng else entirely. You might want to take a sample to the county extension (585) 786-2251) and see if they can give you a more definite diagnosis. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.
