Once the bagworms are in the bags they are not feeding on your plants. Pulling the bags off will stop the next generation and make your trees/shrubs look more attractive. You can spray each individual bag with an insecticide to kill the bagworm inside but I find it easier to simply pull the bags off. If that's not an option you can wait until early next summer when the bagworms are crawling around on the foliage and spray your plants with Bt (bacillus thuringensis) to kill them off. It is sold as Dipel or Thuricide. Another option is to use a systemic insecticide such as Merit or Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect Control. These are used as soil drenches and the product moves throughout the tissues of the plant, killing any insect that feeds on the leaves. Good luck with your bagworm control project!
