Key lime trees develop more thorns than other types of trees but what you describe sounds more like a sucker from the roots than an actual lime tree. Is it possible the original tree died down one winter and the sucker grew in its place? If so, it will never produce fruit for you and the best course of action is to dig out your existing tree and replace it with a healthy new lime tree. Best wishes with your new tree.
