I ended up having some very healthy tomatoes they are heading for about 6 feet tall and all over bending all kinds of limbs and having a plant with all kinds of green tomatoes ready to ripen but lots of dead branches. I made my own bamboo supports, I started to trim off all of the dead stuff and all of my family says I am not supposed to do that. but they are dead? who is right?

I'm with you - if a stem or branch is dead, I'd prune it off. A dead plant part isn't productive and simply looks unsightly so pruning it off won't hurt the plant and may even encourage healthy new growth. Go ahead and prune!
