Water stress can cause the symptoms you describe but if the containers are in full sunshine, the roots can bake in the summer sun. If you've been diligent about watering, I'd guess the summer sun has done some damage. One way around this is to plant in insulated pot; another is to place a large stone, garden ornament or small shrub on in front of the pot to help deflect the sunshine. Good luck with your roses.
