Help! My petunias lost all of their flowers! I've been watering (it's been horrbly hot) and the petunias were doing just fine until recently. Seemed like all of the flowers dropped off at the same time. I saw in the Library a reference to cutting them back in early Aug. Would that help and, if so, how far down should I cut them? Thanks much.

Heat stress will keep your petunias from flowering but you can encourage them to grow by pinching out the growing tips of each of the trailing stems. This will force new growth towards the center of the plant, making it thicker and fuller and ready to bloom when the weather relents. Just pinch out an inch or two of growth on each stem. Enjoy your petunias!
