I have a clump birch that isn't doing too well. When I touched the branches this spring, a white power fell off. Could this be the problem? If so, what is it?

A white powder could indicate a fungal disease (called powdery mildew), which can cause the leaves to curl and drop off prematurely. Before treating with a fungicide such as Banner or Daconil, take a sample of the affected leaves/stems to your local cooperative extension office for positive diagnosis. Contact Salt Lake County Cooperative Extension, 2001 S. State Street S-1200, Salt Lake City, 84190-2350 phone
801-468-3170. Good luck with your birches!
