|Seed potatoes should be planted in March and can be purchased at garden centers and nurseries in January and February. Look for certified seed potatoes to avoid introducing diseases into your garden. Most grocery stores sell potatoes that are treated to prevent them from sprouting to extend their shelf life. Rarely will you find a potato that can be used for propagation in the garden. I'd choose certified seed potatoes at the nursery. The types they carry are the varieties that grow best in your local area.
