I started an avocado tree from seed and this summer it has grown to over 6 feet tall. It is too large to bring in this winter - can I cut it back?

You can cut it back to make it more manageable. For a houseplant, try cutting it back to the correct height and then periodically pinching out the growing tips of each of the branches. This will result in a bushy plant instead of a tall, skinny tree. Best wishes with your avocado tree.
