My neighbor complains about smell of cat urine. Can you tell me about boxwood bush. He has several planted. |
You're right - common Boxwood has an unpleasant odor that is produced by the stems when they are bruised or injured by cold weather. They survive fine, but one of the things that happens with boxwood this far north is that they develop an unpleasant odor, similar to un-neutered male cat. Apparently they have a freeze-survival mechanism that produces an enzyme that really stinks. There's not much you can do about the odor, other than to plant something other than boxwoods. |
