It's really difficult to diagnose a plant problem without the opportunity to inspect the plant and do a little detective work. Since your tree began to leaf out in the spring, winter damage such as freeze probably was not an issue, but root problems may very well be the cause of the death of your dogwood. If the soil doesn't drain well the roots may have become waterlogged and your tree's last ditch effort to live was the attempt to leaf out. Before replanting in the same area, check the planting hole to make sure water does not stand for days or weeks at a time. As long as the soil drains well, a new dogwood should grow and thrive. Hope so!
