How do I deadhead lilies and when should it be done?

When the flowers are spent you can cut them off the plant but you should leave the stem and leaves alone. They are busy manufacturing and transporting energy back to the bulb for next year's growth. They will die down after your first frost and at that time you can cut everything down to ground level. Enjoy your garden!
