Mulching flower gardens - Knowledgebase Question

We just moved into a house in southern NH and the flower beds are badly overgrown. Is it OK to put down pinebark mulch now as we clean them up? In the past we would do this in the fall, but they look awful and we want to get a jump on things.
Thank you very much.

There's no reason not to put a thick layer of mulch down after cleaning up the beds. The mulch will help keep weed seeds from germinating. As long as you keep the mulch an inch or so away from the stems of the plants so the mulch doesn't hold too much moisture against the stems, the pinebark will be a great mulch for your garden.
