how do you remove the spent blooms from gayfeather perennial flowers (Liatris spicata )?

Liatris has a striking flower stalk with plumes of fluffy flowers. You can safely cut back the stalk after the flowers are spent, but leave the foliage until it withers and dies back naturally. You can remove the dead foliage after your first frost and mulch over the plant to protect it during the winter months.
