When to plant bulbs really depends upon which bulbs you are planting. You can purchase bulbs in September or October, but wait to plant until the weather cools. Start by choosing firm bulbs without mold or bruising, then storing them in your refrigerator or in some other cool place that remains below 60 ?F. Daffodils can be planted in October or November, but other spring-flowering bulbs should not be planted until late December or early January.

Most bulbs require a 12- to 16- week chilling period to produce flowers. Keeping them in your refrigerator from September through mid- to late December will provide the necessary chilling period. Hope this clarifies things for you.
