Midwest WI. This year everything planted, trees, roses, hosta, vines, tomato plant, etc. have been attacked. There have been holes appearing in all of the leaves. No sign of aphids just black, half inch long skinny things,in my house and outside. Found them in my rose flowers and where wet. Never had them before this year.Tried spraying with various bug sprays but nothing has helped. Can you help!

I can't tell from your description just what the bugs might be so I'm not sure what to suggest. I'm guessing that they might be boxelder bugs - except these have reddish margins around the outside of the body. Just in case, here's a publication from the University of Wisconsin cooperative extension that can help you i.d. the beetles: http://wihort.uwex.edu/gardenf...

If this is not what you are seeing in your garden, collect a few in a plastic baggie and take them into your local cooperative extension office for positive identification and control recommendations both inside and out. Good luck with your garden.
