Genetics is the reason for variegated leaves on plants. The plant will always have variegated leaves, its entire life. The amount of variegation on each leaf might be different, depending upon the amount of sun or shade the plant receives, but if variegation is in the genes, it will show up on the plant. Hope this answers your question.
