The sod that was laid in my front lawn in june of this year has only grown in patches even with all the watering I've done.
Can I put grass seeds over the sod or do the sod have to be remove first

You can overseed your sod this fall to help it thicken up. If the sod is not growing well inspite of frequent watering, it may not be making good contact with the soil. If not, rolling it with a lawn roller half filled with water will help the roots establish in the ground. Good luck with your sod.
