|can i airate now? than fertilize? what about the weeds?|
|You can aerate your lawn in the spring or in the fall. I'd take care of the weeds first with a product such as Ortho Basic Solutions Lawn Weed Killer or Bayer Advanced Southern Weed Killer for Lawns. Once the weeds are dead, rake them out to the best of your ability and then aerate your lawn.
A core aerator will remove one inch by three inch plugs from the lawn. Leave the plugs on the lawn and they will dissolve in rain or water from the sprinklers. After aerating spread a thin layer of sand or compost over the area and water it in well. The sand or compost plus the soil from the plugs will work their way down into the holes left by the plugs. You can then overseed your entire lawn.
After you have mowed the new lawn 2-3 times you can apply a winterizer type fertilizer to help it maintain health all winter long.
Best wishes with your lawn.
