Japanese zelkova (Zelkova serrata) is a deciduous shade tree that grows in full sun to part shade. It needs ample moisture and grows about 50' tall and wide. It does not appear on my list of trees toxic to horses but a quick phone call to your local vet will give you a definitive answer. 'Accolade Elm' is a popular tree and most garden centers carry them in the early spring. Good luck with your landscape.
