There are 2 native magnolias that will thrive in your gardening region, but a Southern Magnolia will be iffy for your zone 5 garden. 'Edith Bogue' is by far the cold-hardiest Southern Magnolia surviving as far north as zone 5 so if you'd like to try a Southern Magnolia, this is the cultivar to buy. Indiana?s most abundant species, cucumber magnolia (Magnolia acuminata) will grow well in your region; Indiana?s second native species, umbrella magnolia (Magnolia tripetala) is the most cold hardy of the big leaf magnolias. Hope you find just the right magnolia for your landscape.
