Something is eating holes in my fall veggies and leaving small black pellets. What is it and what can I do to eliminate the pest? Thanks you

The small black pellets are a giveaway - caterpillars are feasting on your plants. You can control them with a product called Bt (bacillus thuringensis) which is sold as Dipel or Thuricide. It is a botanical that acts as a stomach poison to caterpillars but is harmless to other insects, people and pets.
