How do you stop weeds from growing in and around your hosta plants.

The best approach is to hand pull the existing weeds and then lay a 3 inch deep layer of organic mulch. The mulch will shade the soil which will keep weed seeds from sprouting but it will also help slow water evaporation and help keep the soil cool. Or, you can use a pre emergent herbicide such as Preen. It will keep weed seeds from sprouting but won't control existing weeds so you'll still need to pull the weeds out of the bed prior to applying the Preen. Best wishes with your hosta bed!
