You can certainly fill in a bare spot with a piece of sod. The soil preparation will be the same: dig out the old grass, mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil, level the soil and lay the sod. Stomp down on it so the roots make good contact with the soil and water it well. Keep the soil moist for about a week until the roots penetrate down into the native soil. Enjoy your new lawn!
