Planted sod lst 3 yrs.bk yd now is grass some dead&weeds/Spring 2011,I want2 start ovr.Bkyrd 30x 15 rectangle,patio hms. fences attach at Entgate 4' 2 lft slopes, want sm area grass& bird/butfly, etc.shrubs to draw them,1 riverbirch all now,want cmpst&sm.grdn area2.mulchwalkwayfromfence to patio. Suggestions? Hope makes sense! Thanks.

I think starting over is a great idea and the good news is that you have all fall and winter to design your new yard. I found some publications from the SC Cooperative Extension that might provide some ideas: http://www.clemson.edu/extensi...

You can also contact your local cooperative extension office for other ideas. The important part of the design is to know the sun/shade exposure and choose plants adapted to the conditions in your yard. Next is to choose plants that will fit in the spaces alloted for them. I'd sketch out the backyard and draw the various elements you'd like to include. It's easier to change on paper than it is to dig and move plants!
