I just came home from a weekend trip to find that one of my 3 San Marzano tomato plans has turned black, and the fruit has black spots. What happened? Are the tomatoes still safe to eat?

Bacterial spot or bacterial speck is probably what you are seeing. You can cut or peel away the spots on the skins of the tomatoes. They won't keep as well as unaffected fruits, but they are still safe to eat.
