When and how much to prune depends upon the type of tree you have. Some can be pruned in the winter when they are dormant and others should be pruned in early spring, just as new growth is appearing. The general rule of thumb is to remove dead, diseased, crossing, rubbing branches, and then prune to shape. Don't leave stubs and make clean cuts so the pruned limbs and branches do not collect water or become homes for insects. There's a great book that will help you with all kinds of pruning. It's called Pruning by Christopher Brickell and should be available in your local library.
