|Alberta spruces should be pruned in the spring while the weather is still cool. This allows the plant to produce new growth that will cover the pruning marks for the rest of the season. You can safely prune them back by 2-4 inches. If you do this on an annual basis, you'll encourage lots of healthy new growth without compromising the shape and size of your trees. I use hedge trimmers to shear off a few inches all over my Alberta spruces.
