Is it too late to trim my lilac bushes? I'm in the Chicago area. |
It is too late to prune your lilac bushes. Lilacs should be pruned immediately after the flowers are spent. They spend all summer developing new growth and new flower buds for the following spring's floral display. If you prune them in late summer or early fall you will prune off the flower buds and your lilacs won't flower next year. I'd wait until they have finished flowering and then prune them when the flowers fade. |
