I purchased subject tree from H.D. and need to know what to fertilize it with.

You can feed your Japanese maple in the spring with a 5-10-10 general purpose fertilizer. The granules can be broadcast beneath the canopy of the tree and scratched into the soil to provide season long nutrients. Be sure to apply in amounts as listed on the fertilizer label, which will vary according to the size of the tree. Enjoy your new maple!
