Ants won't harm your compost but their presence indicates your compost is not cooking like it should. You need a mixture of both brown and green materials in order to warm up the materials and you need to turn it regularly to introduce fresh air. When the compost is cooking (decomposing rapidly) it will be too hot to attract ants. Once you have the right combination of brown and green materials and are turning it on a regular basis, the ants will disappear.
