Different types of hydrangeas react differently to different types of pruning. You're in luck, though. Paniculatas (Limelight types) can be pruned in the fall, winter, or spring. However, it is not necessary to prune them every year. It is suggested that you trim out crossing branches and those that do not contribute to an attractive form whenever necessary. I usually cut overly long branches back in the fall so they won't whip around in winter winds, and then do an overall pruning in the springtime so there will be lots of new flowering growth later in the season. Enjoy your hydrangeas.
