Should Kniphofia Be Cut Back? - Knowledgebase Question

Question by LIVE4VAC

Should kniphofia be cut down or back prior to spring? I live on Long Island and we had a mild winter so the plants did not die down.

It's not necessary to cut it back, although you should remove any rotting bits. The old growth helps protect the crown during temperature swings and the new growth will conceal it for the most part. You can neatly trim away the worst parts if they look truly awful and they bother you.
