squirrels are diggding up large patches of front lawn.doesn't appear to be for the purpose of burying acorns,not a hole ,but an area.

I suspect the squirrels are exploring your lawn, perhaps looking for tasty tidbits like grubs. Unfortunately, there's no easy way of ridding your lawn of the pests, except eliminating whatever their food source happens to be. You might try using a Grub control product on your lawn. Wish I had another solution for you!
