I planted a apricot tree about 5 months ago, and it was almost 4' tall. It has grone very well and two large shoots grew about 5

I'd trace those extra long shoots back to their origins and cut them off completely. They sound like suckers, which are non-productive. Suckers are vigorous growing stems and are usually thicker than the rest of the branches, with larger leaves. I'd prune them off completely so they don't overtake your tree.
