|You can divide astilbes in the fall or in the spring. The entire plant can be dug up and the rootmass divided with a shovel. As long as each division has both stems and roots attached, it will grow into a new plant. I dig mine in the spring, just as new growth appears. This way I know where the stems are developing and can lay the plant on its side and slice through the roots with the blade of a shovel. The divisions can be as large or as small as you want - as long as each division has a stem or shoot with roots attached. Best wishes with your project!
