Our backyard is on the north side of our house. We need shade. What is a good choice for a fast-growing tree to plant and what is the best time of year (fall, spring) to plant it? We have planted one red maple and it is doing very well.

Fall and spring are the best times to plant landscape trees so I'd plant the tree now. The red Florida buckeye, Aesculus pavia, shade tree grows fast into small shade trees that flower brilliantly red in late spring, or the Catalpa tree will work well in your area, as will the orchid tree (Bauhinia). Another fast growing shade tree is Dahlberia. The flowers are small but attract butterflies and the tree grows fast. Hope one of these is just right for your landscape.
