We live on the backside of our apartment building and our balcony does not get much sun. I want to plant pansies in my flower box but I am worried they will not get enough light. Can I substitute artificial light for the sunlight they won't get?

Pansies will grow in the shade and will flower nicely for you as long as it is not deep, deep shade. I'd try planting a few (or growing them from seed) to see how they perform for you. I think you'll find they will be happy in natural light and you won't need to supplement with artificial light. Give it a try!
