Is it better to cut back the mums in the late fall or the early spring.
I have heard both ways.

Wait until they have finished flowering and then cut them back. I usually wait until cold weather kills the stems and then cut them off at ground level. Mulch over the tops of the plants to help protect them from the winter weather. In the spring you can rake or brush away the mulch and new sprouts will emerge from the roots. Best wishes with your mums.
