last summer i put sod down and watered it well, but between the raccoons pulling it up and not a lot of sun i'm debating whether to put sod on top of sod or to just dirt and seed. i live in an apartment and the back yard is just dirt.

Good soil preparation is important for a healthy lawn so you'll need to remove the old sod then rototil or dig the area with a shovel to help loosen the soil. Working some compost into the soil will help provide nutrients and help it drain well. Once you've done that, you can either lay new sod or broadcast grass seeds. Not many turfgrasses will grow well in the shade so I'm afraid you're limited to tall fescue or a shady turfgrass mixture (look for pre-packaged shade tolerant grasses in your local garden center). Hope this information helps!
