Because they are annuals, pansies have smallish root systems and adapt well to growing in containers. When the flowers begin to fade, cut or pinch them off, along with the flowering stem. This will encourage new growth, and lots of new flowers. About the only thing you don't want to do is allow the old flowers to remain on the plant. If you do, they will develop seeds and the plant will die earlier in the season than if you kept it from developing seeds. Be sure to water your pansies on a regular basis and feed every 3-4 weeks with a diluted liquid fertilizer. As long as you keep the dead flowers pinched off, your pansies will grow and bloom for a long time. Enjoy!
