What you've heard is true - squirrels don't like daffodils and once they chew on a daffodil bulb they usually abandon the project and go elsewhere. However, you probably have an entire population of squirrels and each one has to taste for themselves before fleeing. The best defense is to cover over your newly planted bed with chicken wire or hardware cloth. This will keep the critters from digging up the bulbs. You can remove the barrier in late winter, after the ground settles and before the bulbs sprout. Best wishes with your daffodils!
