Since winterizer fertilizer concentrates more on potassium and the brand names fertilizer use no more than 14% potassium, is it wise to buy fertilizers that are cheaper, but come on a ratio of 15-15-15? Why buy a brand name if I just want strong root. Please advice.

Your lawn won't know the source of the nutrients, just that they have been applied. It's true, so big brand names will not impress your lawn and they can be quite costly. You can certainly use a balanced 15-15-15 in the wintertime. We generally recommend you use a fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ratio of NPK during the spring and summer. (such as a 21-7-14) Then, during the late fall you can use a fertilizer with a ratio of 1-2-2 or 1-3-3 (such as a 5-10-10 or a 5-15-15). Hope this clarifies things for you.
