Spring is the best time to dig and transplant chrysanthemums. Although you can dig and move them now in the fall, you'll probably interrupt their flowering. When winter weather kills the stems and leaves, prune everything down to ground level and mulch over the top of the plant with 4-5 inches of compost or straw to provide winter protection. In the spring you can rake or brush away the mulch then dig and divide your mums. As long as each division has both roots and a stem attached, it will grow into a healthy new plant. Hope this answers all your questions!
