In general terms, good garden loam must be porous enough to provide good drainage and permit air to enter, yet be spongy enough to retain an ample supply of moisture. By pure definition, loamy potting soil or potting mix has been put through a sieve and the largest particle is 3/8 in. You can mix your own potting soil or purchase a good quality potting soil (such as Miracle Gro or Kellogg's).
