Start by removing all vegetation in the area then spreading 4-5 inches of compost or other organic matter over the planting bed. Dig the organic matter into the soil then level and plant. Organic matter will enrich the soil and help loosen it so it drains well.

Bone meal is what it sounds like - bones are heated, pasturized and then ground into a fine powder. It becomes a source of calcium for the roots of your plants. Lime is used to change the soil's pH. If the pH is too low (acidic), an application of lime will help sweeten it.
